Something unusual is already happening in Orange's vineyards.
In early September, local winemaker Will Rikard-Bell told me that budburst at his vineyard had arrived approximately four weeks earlier than usual.
So early, in fact, that vines were beginning to burst while pruning was still underway.
That is an observation from one vineyard, not evidence that every vineyard in Orange is experiencing the same thing.
But it is a fascinating early indicator of what may become a particularly interesting growing season.
Australia is now in an El Niño phase, and the Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting warmer-than-average daytime temperatures across much of southern Australia this spring, together with an increased likelihood of below-average rainfall across parts of south-eastern Australia.
What that ultimately means for Orange wine is much less certain.
And that distinction matters.
El Niño does not automatically mean drought. Nor does a particularly strong El Niño necessarily produce proportionately strong effects in Australia. The Bureau repeatedly cautions that Australian rainfall and temperature are influenced by several interacting climate systems, and that its long-range forecasts are a better guide to likely conditions than the strength of El Niño alone.
So this is not a prediction of the 2027 vintage.
It is a look at the conditions now developing, the risks and opportunities they create, and what Orange's growers and winemakers may be watching over the months ahead.
Why Orange Is Different
Orange is one of Australia's most distinctive cool-climate wine regions because of one defining characteristic: altitude.
The Orange Geographic Indication begins at 600 metres above sea level, with vineyards extending to around 1,390 metres.
That difference in elevation has a profound influence on climate.
Wine Australia describes Orange as having mild to warm midsummer temperatures offset by cool to very cool nights during the growing season.
But it is important not to talk about Orange as though every vineyard experiences the same conditions.
Elevation, slope, aspect, soil type, air drainage, water availability and variety can all produce markedly different outcomes between vineyards separated by surprisingly small distances.
That may become especially apparent this season.
The First Question May Be Frost, Not Heat
The immediate concern created by very early budburst is not necessarily summer heat.
It is spring frost.
Dormant grapevines are relatively resistant to cold. Once buds burst and tender green tissue emerges, their vulnerability increases dramatically.
The Australian Wine Research Institute notes that developing shoots become progressively more frost-sensitive as they grow. Delayed pruning is consequently one of the techniques sometimes used in frost-prone vineyards to delay budburst.
That gives Will Rikard-Bell's observation particular significance.
If vines at his site are genuinely around four weeks ahead, those young shoots potentially face several additional weeks during which a frost event could occur.
And El Niño can produce a slightly counter-intuitive combination of conditions.
Spring can be warmer overall while frost risk remains elevated.
Clear, dry conditions allow heat accumulated during the day to radiate away rapidly overnight. The AWRI has specifically noted that El Niño seasons can bring clear skies, lower rainfall, warmer daytime temperatures and colder nights, increasing the potential for frost.
For Orange, where spring frost is already recognised as one of the region's major viticultural hazards, that deserves attention.
So the first major chapter of the 2027 vintage may be written long before summer.
Earlier Budburst Does Not Necessarily Mean Earlier Harvest
It is tempting to assume that vines starting four weeks early will simply be harvested four weeks early.
Viticulture does not work quite that neatly.
Budburst timing is influenced by a combination of factors including soil temperature, variety, rootstock, vineyard management and pruning practices.
Weather during flowering, fruit set, veraison and ripening will subsequently determine whether an early start remains an early season.
A cool period later in spring could slow development.
A hot period could accelerate it.
Rainfall, vine water status and crop load will also play a part.
What early budburst does do is start the physiological clock earlier.
If warmer-than-average conditions continue through spring and summer, growers may ultimately face an earlier or more compressed vintage.
That could become operationally significant.
When several varieties reach their ideal harvest window within a shorter period than usual, pressure increases on picking crews, presses, tanks, winery capacity and, ultimately, winemakers making decisions about precisely when individual blocks should come off.
Less Rain May Reduce Disease Pressure
There is another side to the current outlook.
A relatively dry spring can make life considerably easier from a disease-management perspective.
Rainfall and humidity favour several important grapevine diseases, including downy mildew, powdery mildew and Botrytis.
Periods of persistent wet weather can also make vineyards physically difficult to access precisely when spraying is required.
If Orange does experience the comparatively dry spring currently favoured by the Bureau's outlook, disease pressure may therefore be lower than during wetter seasons.
But even here, certainty would be misplaced.
Disease risk depends on actual rainfall, humidity, temperature, canopy conditions and vineyard management.
A dry-spring climate outlook does not guarantee a disease-free vineyard.
Nor should we assume at this stage that summer will also be dry.
The Bureau specifically cautions against using El Niño alone to predict Australian summer rainfall.
Water Could Become One of the Defining Variables
Orange receives much of its rainfall during winter and spring.
According to Wine Australia, February, March and April are normally the region's three driest months, making supplementary irrigation highly desirable in many vineyards.
If rainfall is below average during spring and warmer conditions increase vine water demand, the amount of moisture carried into summer could become increasingly important.
But the relationship between water stress and wine quality is far more complicated than the popular idea that stressed vines automatically produce better wine.
The effect depends on when water limitation occurs, how severe it becomes, the grape variety, soil conditions, crop load and the wine style being sought.
Water stress around flowering and fruit set can reduce berry numbers and ultimately yield.
Severe stress later in the season can interfere with normal ripening and vine function.
Well-managed water availability may therefore become one of the factors separating vineyards that benefit from a warmer, drier season from those that struggle with it.
And once again, different Orange sites may tell very different stories.
What About the Grapes Themselves?
It is tempting at this stage to start forecasting which varieties might have a great year.
That would be premature.
Orange's principal varieties include Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Pinot Noir also playing an important role at cooler sites.
Warmer conditions will influence the relationship between sugar accumulation, acidity, flavour development, tannin maturity and harvest timing differently in each variety and at each vineyard.
For Chardonnay, for example, the question may become whether flavour development and sugar accumulation remain in balance while sufficient natural acidity is retained.
For later-ripening reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, warmer conditions may alter the timing and nature of physiological ripeness.
Pinot Noir may respond very differently at a high, exposed vineyard than it does at a warmer, lower site.
None of those outcomes can sensibly be predicted in September.
But they are exactly the things worth watching.
Smaller Berries Do Not Automatically Mean Better Wine
Another commonly repeated piece of wine wisdom deserves some qualification.
Dry seasons are sometimes associated with smaller berries, and smaller berries can change the ratio between grape skins and juice.
That can influence colour, tannin and flavour extraction.
But the idea that smaller berries automatically equal better wine is far too simplistic.
If reduced berry size is the consequence of excessive water stress or other adverse conditions, fruit quality may be compromised rather than improved.
Similarly, a low-yielding vintage is not automatically a great vintage.
Yield, berry size and wine quality are related to numerous physiological and management factors.
The coming season may produce smaller crops in some vineyards.
Whether those smaller crops produce more concentrated wines will only become apparent much later.
Extreme Heat Remains a Risk
Orange's elevation helps distinguish its climate from warmer inland wine regions.
But altitude does not make grapevines immune to heat.
The Australian Wine Research Institute warns that grapes become particularly vulnerable to extreme temperatures from veraison onwards.
Heat can cause sunburn, shrivel, reduced berry weight and impaired ripening.
The timing, duration and intensity of individual heat events can therefore matter more than a seasonal average temperature.
A generally warm growing season may prove beneficial at some Orange sites.
Several days of extreme heat arriving at the wrong stage of berry development may not.
The Most Interesting Vintage May Be One That Exposes Orange's Differences
Perhaps that is the most interesting possibility of all.
We often talk about Orange wine as a regional category.
But the Orange wine region covers an enormous range of elevation and vineyard conditions.
A season involving early budburst, below-average spring rainfall and above-average temperatures may amplify those differences.
Which sites escape frost?
Which retain moisture?
Which varieties race ahead?
Which vineyards remain comparatively cool?
Which growers alter pruning, canopy or irrigation strategies?
And when vintage finally arrives, can we taste those differences in the glass?
Those are much more interesting questions than simply asking whether El Niño will produce a good or bad vintage.
So What Can We Say About 2027?
At this stage, surprisingly little with certainty.
We can say that El Niño is influencing the climatic backdrop.
We can say the Bureau currently favours a warmer spring and below-average rainfall across parts of south-eastern Australia.
We can say that Orange's altitude, its susceptibility to spring frost, its normal rainfall pattern and its diversity of vineyard sites make the region particularly interesting under those conditions.
And we now have at least one striking local observation: at Will Rikard-Bell's vineyard, budburst has occurred approximately four weeks earlier than he would normally expect, while pruning is still underway.
But the vines have a long journey ahead.
They still have to survive spring frosts.
They have to flower and set fruit.
They have to negotiate whatever rainfall arrives.
They have to make it through summer heat.
They have to reach veraison.
And eventually growers and winemakers will have to decide when to pick.
Only then will we begin to know what sort of vintage 2027 really is.
